Thanksgiving on Nantucket

Thanksgiving on Nantucket is a wonderful holiday.  Fall on Nantucket is a wonderful time of year.  The downtown shopping and restaurants of Nantucket express their spirit for the holidays along with the local Town government by decorating the entire downtown.  There are wreaths and garland, lights and Christmas trees lining all the streets of downtown.  Local restaurants are open serving some of the most spectacular gastronomic delights found anywhere, Ray Owen (local farmer) raises organic Turkeys that find there way to many dinner tables, local Nantucket bay scallops are harvested from the sea and served a number of ways, and Bartlett Farm fall harvest is at its peak.

Local events range from the festival of wreaths held at the Nantucket Whaling Museum where people display their creativity through handmade crafts a precursor to the Festival of Trees held during the Nantucket Christmas Stroll.  The Nantucket Atheumum (our local library and community center) hold a wonderful fundraiser Thanksgiving morning were proceeds are directed to the children’s section of the library known as the Weasy Library; during this fundraiser hundreds of people are sponsored by friends, family and local businesses to swim in our harbor not matter what the temperature, hundreds more gather to watch the spectacle happen.  Friday evening after Thanksgiving is the annual tree lighting ceremony, the Town of Nantucket has lined the streets of the downtown with Christmas trees every 50 feet, at dusk Christmas carolers appear and begin to sing, the streets are closed to car traffic and the downtown jumps back in time, as day turns to night the crowds gather as downtown Nantucket is lit up with glowing colored and white lights to guide us into the December holiday season.

Throughout all of these activities locals, summer residents who return and weekend and tourists gather to strengthen old relationships and create new ones.  The community coming together, the friendships that are developed and memories that are grown are the most important things of what make Nantucket such a wonderful time over Thanksgiving and the holidays.

I am thankful to be part of this community; I am thankful for my family, friends, community and this wonderful island.

Happy Thanksgiving from Nantucket Island!
